BYOT

About the project: From January 2017 to January 2018, I experimented with a new HR practice first adopted by Stripe, a Silicon Valley online payments company. Stripe made headlines in April 2016 when it announced that it will hire fully-formed teams of 2 to 5 individuals who will come as a tried-and-tested whole package. Starting in August 2016, my colleague Sarah Chan and I pitched creating our own BYOT team of two (Bring Your Own Team) as an experiment in the Government of Canada. And by January 2017, we had landed in the right place. Our new team was mandated to work on a commitment to experiment with new approaches. Sarah and I were recruited together, we co-created our initial job tasks together, and co-drafted and/or co-vetted up to 90% of all projects as a team of two, rather than individuals in a team. For the sake of having an audacious vision, our starting hypothesis was that our BYOT experiment could inspire the rise of semi-autonomous cross-disciplinary teams of public servants that work collaboratively to deliver better particular products, problems or outcomes. We blogged about our experience on Medium.com – see link below.

Period active: January 2017 – January 2018
